Cover your heads!
The helmet of salvation
is the piece of the armor of God that is meant for the head. It
covers your head in the day of battle against Satan, the enemy of
souls.
The helmet forms the
first line of defense of the head against false doctrines. It
protects the understanding from being darkened, and the judgment
from being confused by any temptations or subtle arguments of
Satan.
"Keep watch and pray that you will not fall
into temptation.
The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak." (Mat
26:41)
The crest and other parts
of the warrior's helmets used to be adorned with a great variety of
emblematical figures, carrying various prophetic blessings. The
helmet of salvation carries amongst others, the words
Salvation and Hope. The
person who wears it will be prosperous in all his engagements, and
always escape safely from battle.
"Praise the LORD, my protector! He trains me
for battle and prepares me for war."
(Psa 144:1)
"He alone protects and saves me; he is my
defender, and I shall never be
defeated." (Psa 62:6)
The
hope
of conquering every adversary
and surmounting every
difficulty through the blood of the Lamb, is as an
impenetrable helmet
that protects the head against the cleaving blow of the
battle-axe.
As such it is the most important element of all the armor of
God.
"For it was by hope that we were saved."
(Rom 8:24)
"Because we have this hope, we are very
bold." (2Co 3:12)
Hope is always the
result of a promise. The
helmet of salvation is our promise of the deliverance and protection from the
past, the presence and the future.
"When the true message, the Good News, first
came to you, you heard about the hope it offers. So your faith and
love are based on what you hope for, which is kept safe for you in
heaven." (Col 1:5)
"I am telling you the truth: he who believes
has eternal life." (Joh 6:47)
This hope of continual safety and protection is built on the
promises of God,
to which the upright follower of Christ has a Divine
right.
"I ask that your minds may be opened to see
his light, so that you will know what is the hope to which he has
called you, how rich are the wonderful blessings he promises his
people." (Eph 1:18)
"Happy are those who remain faithful under
trials, because when they succeed in passing such a test, they will
receive as their reward the life which God has promised to those
who love him." (Jam 1:12)
He who
carries Christ in his heart cannot be cheated out of the hope of
heaven.
"The secret is that Christ is in you,
which means that you will share in the glory of God." (Col
1:27)
"... because the Spirit who is in you is
more powerful than
the spirit in those who belong to the world." (1Jo 4:4)
The helmet of
salvation, just like the rest of
the armor of God, is Christ himself, our Savior.
